The basic rule

A player is in an offside position if any part of their head, body, or feet is in the opponent’s half and closer to the goal line than both the ball and the second-last defender (often the last outfield player, with the goalkeeper as the last).

Being offside is not an offence by itself

It only becomes an offence if the player becomes involved in active play — interfering with play, interfering with an opponent, or gaining an advantage.

Timing

The position is judged at the moment a teammate plays the ball, not when the player receives it.

Exceptions

You cannot be offside in your own half
You cannot be offside from a goal kick, throw-in, or corner kick
Being level with the second-last defender is onside
